Women marched today on the occasion of President Rodrigo Duterte’s second State of the Nation Address (SONA) to once more bring forward women’s demands for regular jobs and homes.

Gabriela Women’s Party vehemently condemns continuing harassment and violations being committed against the Lumads, the most recent being the arson of the Lumad shelter located at the UCCP Haran compound in Davao City.

Initial reports reveal that at around 2AM this morning, five unidentified men burned down the Lumad dormitory. At least five Lumad evacuees were injured including four minors. The bishop’s residence in the compound was also reportedly damaged by the fire.

As women’s rights movements all over the world prepare for marking International Working Women’s Day in 24 times zones today, the Gabriela Women’s Party gets a headstart this morning in a solidarity action in front of Camp Crame . Representative Emmi De Jesus and Luz Ilagan joined women leaders of various laying wreaths of flowers and candles in memory of SAF 44 and other Filipinos who were killed after a botched operation in Mamasapano.

The group expressed their solidarity in t-shirts and flaglets with the message “ We stand with the widows and women for truth and justice”.

Women, especially mothers, commuting workers and students would certainly appreciate it more if you gave us free rides everyday of the week by revoking the onerous contracts with profit-raking private firms and nationalizing the transport system.”

Thus said Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luzviminda C. Ilagan in reaction to the DOTC’s offer to give free rides to women on March 8 from 7-9AM and 5-7PM.
