Women trooped to Meralco and the Energy Regulatory Commission to protest what they dubbed as “the heartless, hateful and unconscionable increase in power rates” imposed by the country’s leading power distributor. While Meralco will continue to arbitrarily impose power rate increases, the Aquino administration, through the ERC’s stamp-pad rate hike approvals and in its indifference towards any move in Congress to repeal the EPIRA is culprit to the added burden that poor Filipino households will have to bear.”

MANILA, Philippines — A progressive lawmaker Thursday urged fellow members in the House of Representatives to support efforts to repeal the Electricity Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) after consumers of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco).

Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan complained that Meralco has been billing its costumers an average of P10.35 per kilowatt-hour (kwh) in 2010, a rate which is more than twice as much the rate of P4.87 per kwh in 2001 just before EPIRA was enacted.  read more »

Gabriela, GSIS Fund Owners, Denounce Malacanang-Garcia Bid for Meralco Takeover

Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Liza Maza today joined government employees in denouncing the use of GSIS assets in the Malacanang-led bid to takeover Meralco.

“Malacanang should stop pitting government employees’ funds for this apparent financial crackdown on business and media institutions that refuse to toe her line,” said Maza.

Maza fears transferring the Meralco management from the Lopezes to the Malacanang-Garcia conspiracy is like putting electricity consumers from the frying pan to the fire.  read more »
