Taking time off from the hustle and bustle at the House of Representatives, militant lawmakers Liza Maza, Satur Ocampo and Teddy Casiño today joined the people of Davao in celebrating the 24th Kadayawan Festival.
“We are one with the Dabawenyos in this grand celebration showcasing the richness of our natural resources and our culture and tradition as Filipinos. Amid all the difficulties and challenges, we continue to be resilient as one people and this alone is enough reason to celebrate,” Maza said.
This year’s theme “One People in Communion with the Earth” demonstrates the unity of all people in protecting our world and also poses a challenge on how we can defend the indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands for them to continuously live and practice their way of life.
“We congratulate the people of Davao for this wonderful and meaningful celebration for it not only boasts of colorful floral parade and street dances, it has also become a venue to raise the consciousness of the people about the plight of the indigenous peoples and their struggle for their ancestral lands. It is very important that the people, especially the youth, recognize and actively participate in this undertaking,” Maza stressed.
Aboard the Makabayan floral float, Reps. Maza, Ocampo and Casiño warmly cheered and waved at the crowd.
Last July, the Makabayan trio also visited Davao City for the “Atras Con-Ass” motorcade. They have also successfully launched a nationwide petition signing calling on House Speaker Prospero Nograles and all other congresspersons to abandon all attempts to convene Congress into a constituent assembly.
The Makabayan coalition is composed of the following party list groups represented in Congress: Bayan Muna, Anakpawis, Gabriela, and Kabataan. Also joining the coalition are the ACT Teachers Party List, COURAGE Party List and the OFW part list Migrante. ###
