Gabriela Women’s party Representative Luz Ilagan denounced today the US aggression on Libya and called on the Philippine government to continue its efforts to facilitate the evacuation of Filipino migrant workers amid intensified US-led military attacks on the oil rich nation.

“It is important for the Philippine government continue efforts to bring our OFWs to safety. The US-led military intervention targets the Libyan capital of Tripoli where thousands of Filipinos remain, including those working as nurses and hospital workers.”

Ilagan said that even as there are OFWs who have expressed willingness to stay in Libya because of the lack of employment opportunities in the country, the Philippine government needs to have a system of evacuation on standby should US attacks on Libya intensify.

“At the very least a system of evacuation should be on standby should OFWs and Filipino health workers in Libya decide to leave as US military attacks escalate to a situation similar to the US war in Iraq.”

“The US government is interfering with Libyan political and economic affairs at the pretext of protecting civilians when they are in fact out to seize control of Libya’s oil and natural resources. The US government and its allies are endangering the lives of millions as they pursue their hegemonic interests in the region,” Ilagan concluded.#
