Members of Gabriela Women’s Party today joined the Solidarity Fast at the Mendiola Bridge calling for the immediate release of all political prisoners and the termination of Oplan Bayanihan.
Gabriela lawmaker Arlene Brosas who took part in the Solidarity Fast in Mendiola this morning insisted the detention of more than 400 political prisoners, including 33 women is a continuing injustice.
Brosas who also delivered a privilege speech at the House of Representatives yesterday further said government peace negotiators should not dangle the release of political prisoners as a bargaining chip to compel the National Democratic Front to sign a bilateral ceasefire agreement and instead comply with commitments to grant general amnesty.
Brosas also blamed the continuing implementation of the counter insurgency program,Oplan Bayanihan.
“Oplan Bayanihan led to the illegal arrests, detention and the filing of trumped up charges against activists, progressive individuals and revolutionaries. For as long as this program continues, human rights defenders will remain targets and vulnerable.”
The women’s group is also set to join protests on International Human Rights Day at the Mendiola Bridge on Saturday to further drumbeat their call. #
