Legislators from Gabriela Women’s Party and the Makabayan bloc today renewed calls for the release of Amelia Pond and is seeking an investigation into the illegal arrest of the Lumad school educator and Rural Missionaries of the Philippines regional coordinator.
House Resolution 408 calls the House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights to investigate, in aid of legislation, the human rights violations allegedly perpetrated by elements of the Criminal Investigation And Detection Group (CIDG)-Region VII in Cebu City, on Salugpongan school teacher Amelia Pond, which include illegal arrest and filing of trumped up charges.
“Pond was arrested last August 19 for trumped up charges of murder by virtue of a warrant under the name of Adelfa Toledo. It was also reported that CIDG agents stealthily placed identification cards inside her bag to substantiate their allegations. There are several questions surrounding her arrest, leading to the conclusion that her rights were violated in the process,” said Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Arlene Brosas.
Brosas laments that despite orders for all military units to pull-out of Lumad communities, the continuing detention of Amelia Pond, a known advocate for Lumad rights and education reflects a continuing persecution.
The call to release Amelia Pond is among those that will be highlighted in the upcoming Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya. #
