We take the Palace’s pronouncement of free health services to Dengvaxia recipients with a grain of salt. The statement, which was issued following the persistent clamor of mothers, is vague as to how the health services will be funded in the context of P1.4-billion budget cut for public hospitals in the 2018 national budget.
The delivery of such services requires that government adequately funds public hospitals to improve infrastructure, ensure the availability of medicines and beds and the hiring of sufficient number of health workers. We shall be vigilant as we continue to demand that promises of free healthcare are concretely implemented. #
