Women’s partylist group Gabriela today said President Duterte’s Martial Law threats amid unresolved cases of extra judicial killings in the war against drugs creates an atmosphere of impunity and bodes further abuse and brutality from police and military authorities.
“Isang masamang pangitain, kung hindi man biro ang pagbabanta ng deklarasyon ng Batas Militar ng Pangulo. A declaration of Martial Law will exacerbate the lawlessness, violation of rights and killings that are already hounding the Duterte administration,” said Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Emmi De Jesus, herself a victim of abuses during Marcos’ Martial Law.
De Jesus who was then a youth activist was illegally arrested and tortured also expressed concern over the increased vulnerability of women and children to military and police abuses.
The Gabriela solon further said her group is set to oppose any move to revive Martial Law, including proposals in Congress that are proving to be authoritarian and repressive vestiges of Marcosian rule.
De Jesus said these include the re-imposition of the death penalty, the lowering of the minimum age of criminal responsibility and mandatory Reserve Officers Training Course or ROTC. #
