Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Arlene Brosas expressed today her support for urban poor women in the #OccupyBulacan settling in idle and deteriorating housing projects. Thousands of urban poor from the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap led the occupation of housing units in Pandi, Bulacan.
“Shelter is a basic human need and a basic human right. It is such an irony that while there are millions of homeless families, there are also thousands of government housing units sanding idly and wasting away. It is but just that these homes are occupied,” said Brosas.
The Gabriela solon said the move to occupy idle housing units underscores the failure of government housing projects and policies.
“For so many years, government attempts to relocate urban poor families have failed because it allowed the incursion of business interests and unaffordable amortization rates in favor of private real estate developers. Government housing policies failed to consider the absence of livelihood and basic social services in relocation sites. In the very basic sense, the government failed to consider the plight of the urban poor.”
The #OccupyBulacan which started last March 8, International Women’s Day was largely initiated by urban poor women. #
