The burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani may be a big and calculated effort towards conditioning the public to glorify Marcos’s strongman tactics and to accept extrajudicial killings, torture, rural militarization and the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus as legitimate governance.
Gabriela Women’s Party aired today this warning as the Marcos family presses ahead with the burial of the late dictator at the Libingan ng mga Bayani where military honors such as the 21-gun salute were provided to attempt expunging the shame of his bloody martial law rule.
Emmi De Jesus said.
The women’s partylist group joined Black Friday protests today and condemned the burial of Marcos at the LIbingan ng mga Bayani. They demanded justice for all women victims of martial law including Liliosa Hilao, a campus journalist and activist who was tortured and killed and Lisa Balando, a garments factory worker who was felled by a Metrocom’s bullet at a Labor Day protest.
They warned President Duterte against suspending the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus and following the footsteps of the late dictator and to immediately put to a stop to the militarization of rural communities, the extrajudicial killings and the incidents of police brutality and torture all reminiscent of Marcos’ Martial Rule.
De Jesus, who experienced with her family many gross human rights violations from military arrest and captivity under Marcos, said that people should continue to deny the Marcoses their bid to return to full political power that can only promise more brutal tactics when they succeed. #
