8 November 2016 - Gabriela Women's Party today said President Rodrigo Duterte should stand firm against US military intervention and foil the holding of the PH-US Balikatan joint military exercises. The sectoral women's party slammed Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana recommendations to reverse Duterte's earlier pronouncement to cancel next year's Balikatan.
"Dapat panindigan ni Pangulong Duterte ang nauna niyang pagdeklara ng independent foreign policy at pagpapaalis ng lahat ng tropang dayuhan sa Pilipinas, pati ang planong pagrepaso at pagbabasura sa Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement," Gabriela Rep. Emmi De Jesus said.
Lorenzana's recommendation for exercises to reduce major exercises such as water-borne cruises and amphibious landings, De Jesus said, still reek of unwelcome foreign intervention, as the same number of 1,000 Americans still violate Philippine sovereignty and threaten the security of women and children in areas where the troops will run rampage.
"Balikatan counterterrorism trainings and civic humanitarian response still give US troops the opportunities to directly engage with forces hostile to their presence and can plunge the Philippines in unwanted regional clashes. President Duterte should continue to work with patriotic forces to defend our sovereignty and patrimony and he should formalize his anti-intervention rhetoric by ensuring the end to the unfair military agreements with foreign governments," De Jesus concluded.
