“Vice President Leni Robredo may be misguided in the bid to seek the reversal of the land conversion moratorium from the Department of Agrarian Reform.”
Thus said Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Arlene Brosas today, expressing support for the land conversion moratorium being espoused by the Department of Agrarian Reform as part of the Duterte administration’s program to ensure food security.
Vice President Leni Robredo, appointed chairperson of the Housing and Urban Development has signed a petition asking the President not to endorse the moratorium on land conversion, saying this will only delay housing projects.
“As VP Robredo uses the homeless as an excuse, it becomes obvious that she has entirely missed the point. It was massive land conversion that has evicted millions of farmers from agricultural lands and, in the absence of livelihood, forced them to exodus into congested urban poor communities,” argues Brosas.
The Gabriela solon further said that the housing projects that the HUDCC have been building in partnership with real estate developers. “In fact government housing projects uproot yet again poor families from their livelihood, forcing them to live in projects far from their sources of income while collecting unaffordable amortizations.”
Brosas cited the case of relocates in Northville 3 in Meycauayan, Bulacan where 80% of residents fail to pay the monthly amortizations while almost 50% of beneficiaries have resorted to pawning or selling their units.
“Continuing land conversion will only benefit big real estate businesses that led the conversion of rice fields and agricultural lands into subdivisions, resorts and golf courses. The land conversion moratorium is right on track if indeed we are bent on achieving food security in the coming years. Hindi tayo magugutom.”#
